4K mirrorless cameras are the simplest option for creative filmmaking on a budget. They’re affordable and that they offer you much creative control. they need interchangeable lenses. and that they have large sensors, which makes them better than camcorders for low light shooting and artistic shallow focus shots.

Panasonic G85 Review

I think the Panasonic G85 (G80/81 in Europe) is currently the best-value camera you’ll buy for filmmaking, at under $700 with the lens. I use one. it’s a solidly built magnesium body with a tilt and swivel touchscreen, and therefore the body and lens are weather sealed.

Pros

The sharp 12-60 kit lens covers a useful wide to telephoto zoom range. The camera can shoot 4K, and HD at up to 60p movie. And it’s an equivalent excellent image stabilization as Panasonic’s far more expensive GH5, which makes for straightforward handheld shooting.

Cons

The smallish Micro Four Thirds sensor means it’s not nearly as good in low light as some rivals, and it doesn’t have a headphone socket (though there are ways to assemble an audio output from the HDMI socket). Battery life is OK but not great – you’ll add A battery grip – and autofocus is slow when shooting 4K. But its solid build, movie and image stabilization make it an excellent choice.

Cons

It doesn’t have in-body image stabilization, and therefore the screen tilts instead of swiveling fully. Battery life isn’t great, but you’ll power it over USB-C using an external electrical converter.

Used Canon T4i or Canon T3i

On a decent budget, used older models of Canon’s video SLRs like the T4i are the simplest choice. Unlike the opposite cameras here, it’s not mirrorless and it doesn’t shoot 4K. But it’s good colors, a comparatively large APS-C sensor, and an honest range of lenses.

Alternatively, you’ll choose the mirrorless EOS-M or a camcorder.
